What qualifies as a good SAT score?

It is not as simple as pointing out a particular number. What is considered a good score purely depends on the colleges and universities that you are applying to. The higher the SAT score, the better the colleges you can apply to. However, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get in with just a good score as your high school’s grade point average (GPA) is also taken into account. International students should also have a decent mark in the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to prove their proficiency in the English language.

Each section in the SAT exam is awarded marks in the range between 200 to 800. To be accepted by one of the hundred top tier colleges, you need a composite SAT score of 1200 to 1400. Every year, only five percent of the test takers score of 1400. A score of 1200 can earn you a good scholarship. However, a really high-Grade Point Average can also grant a merit scholarship. So, 1200 can be deemed as a good SAT score.

A score of 1080 or more, falls under the above-average category. Sometimes, people in the above-average category might get into one of the top-tier colleges provided they have a good GPA and strong extra-curricular background. Else, branch colleges of state university accept an application for this score.

It is advised that international students start their SAT exam preparation well in advance to bag a good score. The United State’s school curriculum is very different from other countries – right in terms of their educational methods to their extra-curricular activities. It is not possible to compete with them in terms of curricular. The easiest way would be to score a whopping 1200 or more to guarantee admission.

To make it easier, the following table depicts the score you have to obtain to gain admission into one of the top tier colleges:

To help you boost your score to reach a good SAT score, mentors from different SAT coaching classes in Mumbai have a few suggestions given below:

  • Whenever you score less, ask yourself three questions –
    • Why I missed the question?
    • Why the correct answer is the correct one and my answer is incorrect?
    • What will I do differently next time?
  • This thorough analysis will help you set your priorities straight.
  • Take as many mock tests as possible.
  • It is a popular belief that, if the mock papers are tough, you’ll score 100 points more than that in your SAT exam. Always go for the tougher mocks.
  • Practice as much as you can to get acquainted with the speed required.

As mentioned earlier, though there are good, above-average, average, and below-average SAT scores, any score other than below average will be considered by the universities. You may not get the desired top tier university, but there’ll definitely be some college or the other in store for you.

If all you want is an American degree, do not hesitate to apply to all the not-so-popular universities. If placements and the college rank matters a lot to you, the only way to get admission is by scoring the required points. Don’t worry, you have years ahead of you.

Unlike India, Americans don’t get into higher studies right after high school. In some cases, people pause their high school graduation and search for jobs. Others might work for a year or two to save up for their expenses in college. So, it doesn’t make a huge difference if you join after a year or two after completing high school.

Do not give up if your first SAT attempt doesn’t qualify as a good score. Take out the time to prepare again right from scratch. Go through the suggestions mentioned above to analyze where you had gone wrong previously. As opposed to Indian academic year, the colleges in the US has intake every 6 months once. So, prepare well for the next 6 months and give the exam again, you can get into the next program.

Losing hope never does any good, try until you come out with flying colors. After all, the desired score is just a few hours of exams away. Your dream score will pave the way to your desired college, just make sure you’re enrolled in the best SAT classes in Mumbai.
