Sony’s first affordable phone of 2017 is the Xperia XA1, boasting gorgeous design and some decent specs for a low asking price here in the UK. However, one of the best features is that 8MP front selfie camera has a 23mm wide-angle lens that lets you fit lots of friends into the picture. The hand shutter automatically detects the palm of your hand and takes your selfie given the budget price point. You can only shoot up to Full HD video, so no 4K resolution footage option unlike the Moto G5 Plus. However, Sony’s Steady Shot image stabilization tech makes for smooth, decent-looking video.

    Moto G5 Plus

Trying to find a decent camera at the budget end of the smartphone market is a bit like trying to find a needle in a haystack, so the Moto G5 Plus is worthy of praise. Although it’s not as fast as some of the top-range camera phones, the camera app in the G5 Plus could not be easier to use and in decent lighting, the automatic settings get good results most of the time.

The main camera is rated at 12-megapixels, so it can capture a lot of detail. There’s an f/1.7 aperture and it supports phase detection and laser autofocus. HDR is a little slow, but it boosts picture quality dramatically. Video capture goes up to 4K at 30fps and the auto-stabilization works well to eradicate shaking. There’s also a standard 5-megapixel selfie camera that offers a wider angle that’s ideal for group shots.

Surprisingly, there is also a professional mode on the Moto G5 Plus that lets you dig into settings and play with a series of sliders to improve your photos. It’s a good all-round package at this price.

While low-light performance is good for a budget phone, you’re still going to see a bit of noise creeping in. The lack of OIS and the time it takes to process HDR shots, means you’ll want a steady hand. Rushed, spontaneous shots won’t turn out so well on the G5 Plus.

Still, it’s the best camera on a phone in this low price range. Most budget phones have absolutely terrible cameras, but the Moto G5 Plus doesn’t disappoint; it excels.

If you are looking for the best image quality, nothing beats Lumia 1020. What makes Lumia 1020 so unique?

3/2″ Sensor – It’s huge (or as Bernie would say yuge!) when you compare it to the other smartphone camera sensors. Bigger sensors are able to capture more light and hence perform better.

Xenon Flash – LED flash technology has come a long way but it still doesn’t beat a proper Xenon flash. It allows you to capture natural looking pictures in low light.

Optical Image Stabilization – Lumia 1020 packs three dimensional OIS which helps in low light by reducing natural shake of your hand. It also results in more stable videos.

Now, Lumia 1020 will give you the best image quality as you can see here, but it’s an old smartphone and it runs a rather unpopular OS i.e. Windows Mobile. If image quality is your only concern then you should get Lumia 1020 but if you use different kind of apps and stuff, then you’ll have to go with a different device.

You can get Lumia 1020 for cheap today.

If you are looking for overall camera capability like camera speed, filters, HDR etc, right now top contenders are Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 6S Plus. Both are amazing shooters and you wouldn’t regret buying any of them one bit.

For other options, check DXO Mark. Although it’s not that accurate, it will give you an idea which phone to buy.
